Zhu Ni 朱泥
Zhu Ni (朱泥) is a premium type of red clay within the broader category of Yixing Zi Sha (宜兴紫砂) clay, renowned for its high iron content and distinctive red hue. It originates from Yixing, Jiangsu Province, China, a region celebrated for its rich deposits of various Zi Sha clays used in traditional teapot making.
- Color:
After firing, Zhu Ni exhibits a warm, rich red, orange-red, or cinnabar tone. When hot water is poured over the surface, the clay reveals a bright, vivid red glow with subtle purplish reflections. - Texture:
The clay is fine, smooth, and glossy with an oily, almost buttery feel. This gives Zhu Ni teapots an elegant and refined appearance. - Plasticity:
Zhu Ni is notoriously difficult to shape due to its fragile and fragmented natural state. Traditional production requires careful hand-selection of raw clay and skilled craftsmanship. It is prone to deformation and cracking during shaping and firing. - Firing:
Typically fired at 1130–1180°C, Zhu Ni has a high shrinkage rate (12%–30%), which further increases the difficulty of producing flawless teapots. As a result, the yield rate is low, making Zhu Ni works relatively rare. - Porosity & Functionality:
With excellent breathability, Zhu Ni is ideal for brewing high-aroma teas, such as high mountain oolong or Tie Guan Yin, allowing the flavors to develop fully. - Collectibility:
Due to the clay’s scarcity, complexity in processing, and high risk of failure during firing, Zhu Ni teapots hold significant collectible
value. Older, well-preserved Zhu Ni pieces are especially sought after by collectors for their rarity and aesthetic appeal.
- Initial Preparation:
Before first use, rinse the teapot inside and out with clean water. Then, place it in a container, fully submerged (including filling the teapot itself with water), and let it soak overnight. The next day, pour boiling water over it to rinse. This gentle process helps remove any residual clay scent or dust and prepares the teapot for brewing.
- Daily Use and Maintenance:
After each use, simply rinse the teapot with hot water—no soap needed. Allow it to air dry with the lid off to keep the interior clean and fresh. Over time, your teapot will develop a natural patina that enhances both its beauty and the flavor of your tea.
