Chinese name: Ming Qian West Lake Lóng Jǐng 明前西湖龙井
West Lake Long Jing (Gragon-well) Pre-Qingming, also known as Mingqian Xi Hu Long Jing, is one of the most prized green teas in China. Harvested before the Qingming Festival in second half of March and beginning of April, this tea is celebrated for its exceptional quality, delicate flavor, and vibrant freshness.
The first flush ensures that the tea leaves are young, tender, and
full of nutrients accumulated during the winter dormancy. These leaves are carefully hand-picked and processed using traditional methods, resulting in flat, smooth, and uniform blades with a glossy green appearance. The meticulous craftsmanship preserves the tea’s tender bean fragrance with subtle floral undertones (嫩豆花香,伴有花香), making it a favorite among tea connoisseurs.
When brewed, this tea produces a light golden-green liquor with a
refreshing, crisp taste. The flavor is smooth with a natural sweetness that lingers on the palate. Unlike later harvests, this first flush tea has a softer, more refined profile, free from bitterness, allowing its pure essence to shine through.
The tea’s high amino acid content contributes to its umami richness,
while its antioxidants make it a healthy choice for daily enjoyment. It
is best brewed at 80-85°C (176-185°F) to preserve its delicate flavors. Using a glass or porcelain cup allows the leaves to gracefully unfurl, releasing their full aroma and taste.
Renowned for its elegance and purity, West Lake Long Jing is a tea
that embodies the artistry of Chinese tea culture. Whether savored for its refreshing taste or appreciated for its historical significance, it
remains a timeless favorite among tea enthusiasts worldwide.
